The 30th National Junior Athletics Championship got underway in the
happening city of Vijayawada on Wednesday to a colorful start.
As many as two national records and one meet record were set on the very first day of the five day sports extravaganza. National records were set in Under 14 Girls High Jump and Under 16 Boys 1000 meter run.
Meet record was set in Under 18 Boys 1,500 meter run.
Gayatri Sivakumar (13) of Kerala had bettered her own national record of 1.55 meter set in 2013 National Junior Athletics Championship by jumping 1.61 meters. Beant Singh (14) of Haryana set the new national record in 1000 meters run by clocking 2:27.87. The national record of 2:27.87 was previously held by Mandeep Goyala of Maharahstra set in 2010. Rahul of Kerala set the new meet record in under 18 boys category in 1,500 meter run. He clocked 3:55.28 bettering the previous meet record for the event held by Pandala Trinath of AP, who clocked 3:56.01
The entire Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium, the venue of the event wore a colorful look, with girls and boys of different age groups, who came here to participate in the events practicing outside the grounds to achieve the top Honors.
In the evening, Assembly Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Kodela Siva Prasad Rao formally inaugurated the event by declaring it opened. He along with other guests reviewed the march past by participating contingents of players from different states. Torch was lit to mark the inaugural of the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Rao felt that the state had great potential to host the national events, given its past records. He said sports are important for the all-round development of the youth, hence it needs to be encouraged.
''Government of India should give more funding, which at present is inadequate for the sports. It should encourage upcoming athletes and help the states providing better infrastructure facilities for the sports,'' he said.
Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Adille J Smuariwalla, who was Olympian himself having represented the country in sprint, advised the sportsman to train continually, but smartly. ''You should not overexert yourself and also see that you do not take shortcuts like performance enhancing drugs, which will not bring laurels but shame,'' he said.
He informed that national coaches are closely watching the event and assessing to find the talent. He said they will shortly come out with a new programme, which will help both seniors and juniors.
Ministers Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, K Srinivas and others also spoke. Cultural programmes by various school and college students enlivened the evening of the first day of the national sports event at IGMC Stadium.
