Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of different types of life found on the Earth and the variations within species.[1] It is a measure of the variety of organisms present in different ecosystems. This can refer to genetic variation, ecosystem variation, or species variation (number of species)[1] within an area, biome, or planet. Terrestrial biodiversity tends to be greater near the equator,[2] which seems to be the result of the warm climate and high primary productivity.[3] Biodiversity is not distributed evenly on Earth. It is richest in the tropics. Marine biodiversity tends to be highest along coasts in the Western Pacific, where sea surface temperature is highest and in the mid-latitudinal band in all oceans. There are latitudinal gradients in species diversity.[4] Biodiversity generally tends to cluster in hotspots,[5] and has been increasing through time[6][7] but will be likely to slow in the future.[8]
The number and variety of plants, animals and other organisms that exist is known as biodiversity. It is an essential component of nature and it ensures the survival of human species by providing food, fuel, shelter, medicines and other resources to mankind. The richness of biodiversity depends on the climatic conditions and area of the region. All species of plants taken together are known as flora and about 70,000 species of plants are known till date. All species of animals taken together are known as fauna which includes birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, insects, crustaceans, molluscs, etc.
Rapid environmental changes typically cause mass extinctions.[9][10][11] More than 99 percent of all species, amounting to over five billion species,[12] that ever lived on Earth are estimated to be extinct.[13][14] Estimates on the number of Earth's current species range from 10 million to 14 million,[15] of which about 1.2 million have been documented and over 86 percent have not yet been described.[16] The total amount of related DNA base pairs on Earth is estimated at 5.0 x 1037, and weighs 50 billion tonnes.[17] In comparison, the total mass of the biosphere has been estimated to be as much as 4 TtC (trillion tons of carbon).[18]
The age of the Earth is about 4.54 billion years old.[19][20][21] The earliest undisputed evidence of life on Earth dates at least from 3.5 billion years ago,[22][23][24] during the Eoarchean Era after a geological crust started to solidify following the earlier molten Hadean Eon. There are microbial mat fossils found in 3.48 billion-year-old sandstone discovered in Western Australia.[25][26][27] Other early physical evidence of a biogenic substance is graphite in 3.7 billion-year-old metasedimentary rocks discovered in Western Greenland.[28] More recently, in 2015, "remains of biotic life" were found in 4.1 billion-year-old rocks in Western Australia.[29][30] According to one of the researchers, "If life arose relatively quickly on Earth ... then it could be common in the universe."[29]
Since life began on Earth, five major mass extinctions and several minor events have led to large and sudden drops in biodiversity. The Phanerozoic eon (the last 540 million years) marked a rapid growth in biodiversity via the Cambrian explosion—a period during which the majority of multicellular phyla first appeared.[31] The next 400 million years included repeated, massive biodiversity losses classified as mass extinction events. In the Carboniferous, rainforest collapse led to a great loss of plant and animal life.[32] The Permian–Triassic extinction event, 251 million years ago, was the worst; vertebrate recovery took 30 million years.[33] The most recent, the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, occurred 65 million years ago and has often attracted more attention than others because it resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs.[34]
The period since the emergence of humans has displayed an ongoing biodiversity reduction and an accompanying loss of genetic diversity. Named the Holocene extinction, the reduction is caused primarily by human impacts, particularly habitat destruction. Conversely, biodiversity impacts human health in a number of ways, both positively and negatively.[35]
The United Nations designated 2011–2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity.

school kalothlsavam (kerala)

History

Kerala School Kalolsavam is a festival unique in its structure and organisation. The organisational set up from school level to state level for the conduct of the Kalolsavam is monitored by Education Department as per the manual drafted by experts in the field. Looking back into the history of School Kalolsavam in the last 53 years it is seen that the Kalolsavam has refined much in letter and spirit. Students get opportunity to express their talent in school level, sub district level, district level and at last at state level. When performers reach state level, perfection reaches its zenith.
In 1956-57 when the school Kalolsavam began, it hadn't reached any where near the variety, pomp and the vast canvas which the festival has now reached. Dr.C.S.Venkiteswaran was the DPI in 1956. He had the opportunity to participate in the Inter-University festival at Delhi during that time. This inspired the great visionary to organize a similar festival at school level and thus he sowed the seed of School Kalolsavam at Ernakulam SRV High School in 1956. Programme was scheduled for one day and there were 200 participants. Mid-day meal and tea was served. Participation was directly from school level. Year by year more and more items were included, and number of days of the Kalolsavam was increased. Number of participants have increased to ten thousand.
From 1956-1957 to 2008-2009 School Kalolsavam has crossed many mile stones. Now Govt. has active involvement with peoples representatives from Grama Panchayath level to Corporation Level, Member of Legislative Assembly to Members of Parliament, Ministers etc. giving all support for the success of the Kalolsavam. While in 1956-57 there were only 200 participants, in 2008-2009 there are nearly 10,000 participants. While in 1956-57, it was a business of one day, today it is a festival of 7 days. The decorative main stage accommodates thousands of people. Delicious food is prepared for breakfast, mid day meals & supper for nearly ten thousand participants. The year 1975, when the festival was hosted at Calicut, was a turning point in the history of School Kalolsavam. Many art forms of Kerala tradition like Kathakali music, Mohiniyattom, Aksharaslokam etc. got entry to Kalolsavam for the first time. As a prelude to the Kalolsavam, proclamation rally was organised in 1975. Later on Margomkali, Kuchipudi, Yakshaganam, Band display etc. got entry to the Kalolsavam. By the end of eighties, ever rolling Golden Cup of 117.5 sovereign gold was awarded to the overall winning Revenue District. This Gold Cup was designed by Chirayankeezhu Srikandan Nair who was an Art Instructor in Education Department.
In the year 2000, Millennium trophy a beautiful dancing Nataraja trophy was introduced. Today there are numerous trophies, cash prizes, grace marks etc. to the winners. The system of Kalathilakam & Kalaprathiba was dispensed with to eliminate unhealthy competition. The festival has a foolproof system to encourage thousands of students in various Art & Literary forms in each academic year. Perfect time management, impartial Judgement, on the spot arrangements to dispose of appeals etc. makes the art festival unique in all aspects. From 2008-2009 it becomes a festival of students from Std.VIII to Plus 2 level. In a Nut Shell, School Kalolsavam is a Kaleidoscope of Kerala's young talent in the field of Art and Literature. Each year the venue of the Kalolsavam is changed from one District to another to ensure the participation of the people throughout the state

Kerala School Sports and Games

Kerala School Sports system is the most structured and extensive local way of sports exposure and development of the youth. Kerala School Sports is one of eminent events happening in the student’s community. Kerala School Sports 2010 was set out in the field with an introduction of a software application that made this great event enliven.
School Sports is conducted at 3 levels: Athletics, Aquatics and Games. Games include Taekwondo, Judo, Wrestling and Chess. This online application has been developed to manage all these seven events starting from sub district to state level.
Previously the data entry part, which includes school registration, entering participants details, remitting fees etc were a chaos at the fest venue every year. But with the introduction of an online system which is expanded up to the state level, all the processes are now made ease, fast and effective. This system not only provides an easy way for data entry but also does the validation part too.
Every school and students would be given a unique identification number to avoid any kind of duplication. The system also generates conspicuous participant cards which include detailed information about the participants.
The system generates the tabulation sheets and score sheets for the judges and the sports committee can simply download the page and use it. Order of events, status of each school, list of participants and even the entire Sports manual can be viewed online. The system also enabled the automation of the result generation process, making it reliable and reusable.
